Alston Bar & Beef (Glendola Leisure Group)

There are many places to get a steak in Glasgow, but for those in the know, there is only one place – Alston Bar & Beef. The chic restaurant and gin bar provides an atmospheric setting in which to sink your fork into the finest Scottish steak washed down with any one of umpteen delicious libations. The restaurant claims to serve up the best steak and gin in the city and those who’ve dined there would surely agree. Tweed Valley beef sourced from accredited small batch farms isn’t just more ethical – it’s also more delicious. Tucked away under the Gordon Street entrance to Glasgow Central Station, Alston’s unprepossessing exterior gives way to a cavernous exterior, one that’s decked out with stylish Scottish murals on its walls and which offers an oasis of calm from the hubbub of the adjacent station. With over 120 gins to choose from, it’s safe to say that Alston Bar & Beef is the sort of place that demands more than one visit. While the steaks are spectacular, they’re certainly not the only tempting offering on the menu; there’s also surf and turf, or rather ‘beef and reef’ as Alston like to describe it. Speaking of comparisons, you’ve also got ‘muscle vs mussel’, referring to the steak frites and moules frites that are begging to be savoured, preferably together. There’s a set menu that runs Monday to Saturday, while an a la carte menu is rolled out in the evenings. Wednesday is the day to arrive if you’d like to experience The Pride of The Sea vs The Favourite of The Land: a 500g sharing rump steak and two giant tiger prawns. A good steak is one of life’s greatest pleasures, and at Alston Bar & Beef, the pleasure is all yours.

I try and get here as often as I can when in Glasgow. Tucked away in Central station, this quiet underground restaurant always delivers with amazing food. Would recommend booking a table in advance to avoid disappointment.
